We lost a good friend and stalwart member of our Navy League family when 100-year old Sumner Hushing passed away last night March 31st. He was visited on Friday by Bob Crippen, who kept a close shipmate’s eye on Sumner these past few years.

stalwart Navy League shipmate, Stan Shanck; he passed away Nov 29th after suffering a stroke in the evening. Stan turned 92 in November.

Dr. Chuck Moore Captain, U.S. Navy, WW-2 Navy Veteran Combat Surgeon – Vietnam
June 1925 – April 2017

Dr. Charles L. (Chuck) Moore – faithful Palm Beach Navy Leaguer and proud member of the Eagles veterans lunch group passed away at home April 20 in hospice care, with his angel at his side.

To our family at Navy League of the Unite States, it is with great sadness that I write to you today about the loss of Philip Harris, PhD. He served the U.S. Navy 1944-1946. A close friend, a fellow Navy Leaguer, and Navy Radarman from World War II.

Dr. Jim Lea – Captain, U.S. Navy, WW-2 Navy Medic, Vietnam – Commanding Officer, 1st Med Battalion, 1st Marine Division
Feb 1926 – Feb 2017

What a sad day as we’ve lost another of our true stalwart Navy Leaguers when Captain Jim Lea passed away today, at home with family and hospice care.

Jim joined the Navy during World War-2 and served with distinction in the Pacific as an 18 year-old combat medic.

James Augustine Ponce – 19 July 1917 – 28 December 2015

Jim Ponce’s family and many of his friends attended the Memorial Mass at St Edward Church on Wednesday, Jan 6th. Monsignor Thomas Klinzing celebrated the mass and noted that Jim was undoubtedly already giving tours of heaven and touching the hearts theere as he did here in Palm Beach.

John “JACK” Hanscom Commander, U.S. Navy Reserves (Retired) Council President – Palm Beach Council – 12 Dec 2015

Memorial Service

A memorial service was conducted for Council President Jack Hanscom at Navy Operational Support Center (NOSC), West Palm Beach on Saturday, Dec 12th.

NOSC Commanding Officer Trent Westhoff and Senior Enlisted Advisor Chief David Stuart took great pains to make their facility available to honor Jack, a 30-yr Navy Reserve Officer. A NOSC Honor Guard led by Chief Petty Officer Hernandez executed Navy honors and presented Jack’s wife Jianying with the folded flag.

We suffered a significant loss when our Council President Jack Hanscom passed away at JFK Medical Center October 13 due to cardiac arrest during pre-surgery testing.

Jack provided a great spirit to all council activities and worked hard out front and behind the scenes to make every event special.
